Every year a list of US new college rankings comes out. The list is fairly predictable most years with the big three typically including Harvard, Princeton and Yale. As of September of 2010 that was the exact order with Harvard once again being ranked number one across the nation.
Rankings four through six include Columbia, Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania, with Stanford and Pennsylvania actually achieving the same ranking score according to the U.S. News and World Report. From there the field bunches up with several colleges ranked through to the twelfth nationally. These include California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth, Duke, University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
Each college also ranks on a regional scale, which may be more relevant to most prospective students. These rankings, which are also provided on a yearly basis, include scores that quantify number of programs offered, students graduating, and specific factors of academic excellence. Colleges are divided into those offering a range of programs to those that offer only specialized programs, so the rankings are comparing colleges of equal educational opportunity.
Taking time to review the lists each year does give you an idea of the best schools on a program, regional or national level. The US new college rankings come out yearly in autumn and include tuition costs, another important consideration when selecting a school.
