Every year in September the US News college rankings are out on the internet. This much awaited list scores and then ranks colleges in the United States against each other by category and type of educational facility. The ranking, completed by U.S News and World Report, is based on specific, quantifiable academic markers. Since each type of college is only compared to other similar colleges, it really does attempt to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

Colleges can be grouped for ranking based on several factors. These include the range of programs offered and the types of degree programs provided. National rankings include the major colleges that offer everything from undergraduate through to doctoral level programs. Liberal arts colleges on the national level are a separate ranking system. Regional rankings are broken down into colleges and universities, then there are further breakdowns by specific programs.

Every year a list of US new college rankings comes out. The list is fairly predictable most years with the big three typically including Harvard, Princeton and Yale. As of September of 2010 that was the exact order with Harvard once again being ranked number one across the nation.

Rankings four through six include Columbia, Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania, with Stanford and Pennsylvania actually achieving the same ranking score according to the U.S. News and World Report.
