Cafeteria now open following health scare

The Ventura College cafeteria is opened for business following a health department shutdown last week.

The closure lasted one day while cafeteria staff cleaned up, Bear Munoz, one of the cafeteria cooks, said Tuesday. “We are back up and running and everything is cool,” Munoz said. “We are ready for business; come on in.”

The cafeteria was closed Monday, Oct. 27, due to “un-foreseen circumstances.”

The Ventura County Environmental Health Department suspended the cafeteria’s permit “due to a rodent infestation and unsanitary conditions because of the rodent infestation,” said Debbie Borsos, an Environmental Health supervisor.

Health Department people inspected the cafeteria Tuesday afternoon, Borsos said, and the cafeteria was reopened.

During the closure, Ramiro Sanchez, VC executive vice president, said the incident was unfortunate but that “we’re glad that we found the problem. We are fixing it and the cafeteria will be up and running shortly.”

A fall open house social for veterans, active duty and reserve members and their families will take place on Saturday Nov. 8 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in downtown Ventura. The event will be hosted by the Ventura Vet Center and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Ventura.

There are 65,543 veterans in Ventura County as of 2003, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Ventura College officials don’t know how many veterans are taking classes at the college. “Right now, for this semester, we have 152 veterans using their benefits” under the Montgomery GI Bill and other veterans benefits programs, said Isabel Tapia, VC veterans representative.

Cummings stated, "As an organization working closely with the VFW Post in Ventura, we feel that every service member and veteran deserves particular events which address their unique and special needs… This is our opportunity to pay tribute to them."
