The Ventura College Football Pirates were recognized Wednesday, Feb. 20, as a team who came together in 2007 by winning the WSC Pacific Division Championship (South). Team members and coaching staff were honored during halftime at the men’s basketball game, receiving championship rings to a standing ovation.

Coach Jon Mack, who led the team to success, hand-delivered the championship rings to his players and coaching staff to thunderous applause.

Later, Mack reacted to the response. “First, we really thank the community that came out to support us. The crowd was huge at the basketball game on Wednesday night,” he said. “And the boys getting a standing ovation for winning the championship – it was really heartwarming that the community supports us that well.”

With the 2008 season fast approaching, the team had an opportunity to celebrate. But many are already eyeing the future.

“It was lovely, you know, just the feeling of accomplishment that we got,” said Chris Williams, Pirates defensive end. He added, “But it’s still got that desire side, with the state champs. But we’ll settle for Southern California Bowl champs right now.”

In an Athletic Center packed to near capacity, the team got a chance to thank students, faculty and community members for supporting last season’s campaign and invite everyone to participate in the 2008 Pirates Football season.

Some of those on the Ventura College campus who have never attended a Pirates football game look forward to watching the team this fall.

“Since I know they won the championship, I might want to check it out,” VC student Gabriella McGrath said. “I will definitely check it out.”
