The evening of April 15 heralded the kickoff of the Annual Student Art Awards Exhibition with a reception honoring the entrants and those receiving awards for artistic merit.

The turnout included the artists, their families, VC faculty as well as students, and locals with an interest in the arts. The ceremony awarded honors in several categories, and the mediums ranged from paintings to sketches to sculpture to photography.

The highest honor of the evening, best in show, was bestowed upon Andrea Vargas-Mendoza, who also received four other awards by the end of the evening. When asked how she felt about winning not only the most esteemed prize of the exhibition but an award for each piece she had submitted, she said, "It's all thanks to Ventura College. They make dreams come true."

The ceremony was presented by members of the board and concluded with the opening of the galleries and refreshments. Held in the New Media Gallery and Gallery 2 on the Ventura College campus, the exhibition will be open for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, through May 7.
